I pour it. I smoke it. And I tell you what happens.

What Is Friday Night Pour?
Friday Night Pour is my weekly bourbon-and-cigar pairing series here at Bathrobe Patriot.
Each episode starts with:
One bourbon.
One cigar.
One Friday night.
Then I follow the pairing through the cigar instead of taking two sips, three puffs and declaring victory.
I want to know:
Does either one overpower the other?
Does the bourbon change what I notice in the cigar?
Does the cigar change what I notice in the bourbon?
Does the pairing improve as the cigar develops?
And most importantly:
Would I pair them again?
That last question matters more to me than anything else.
Because Friday Night Pour isn’t about finding combinations that sound impressive.
It’s about finding combinations worth repeating.
Friday Night Pour is really one piece of a bigger idea: learning how to have a better weekend instead of letting Friday, Saturday and Sunday disappear.

Vol. 11 — Sunday Went Off Script at Jallo
Private Barrel + Short Story • An Off-Script Sunday
An uplifting talent show brought Gina and me to New Port Richey, and Jallo caught our attention on the drive over. We stopped on the way home, where I paired Jallo’s 110-proof private-barrel Angel’s Envy Single Barrel with an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story Natural while Gina enjoyed espresso and a Tatiana chocolate cigar. Add leather chairs, attentive service from Kiryanna, a covered patio and three football games on three TVs, and Vol. 11 became a reminder that Friday Night Pour doesn’t have to happen on Friday. Sometimes Sunday goes off script—and the weekend is better for it.
How I Judge Every Friday Night Pour
I’m not giving a pairing a good score just because I like the bourbon.
And I’m not giving it a good score because I like the cigar.
The combination has to work.
That’s why every episode eventually faces the same test.
The Friday Night Pour Test
Did either one overpower the other?
If I can’t taste the bourbon anymore because the cigar bulldozed it, we have a problem.
Same thing in reverse.
Did the bourbon change the cigar?
A good sip can make sweetness, spice, wood, cocoa, coffee or other characteristics suddenly become more noticeable in the next draw.
That’s interesting.
Did the cigar change the bourbon?
This is one of my favorite parts.
The whiskey in the glass hasn’t changed.
Your palate has.
A cigar can suddenly make a bourbon seem sweeter, oakier, spicier or completely different from the first sip.
Did the pairing get better?
Cigars evolve.
So the pairing should be judged over time.
What works during the first third may become fantastic—or fall apart—during the second and final thirds.
Would I pair them again?
Here’s the big one.
Forget the tasting vocabulary.
Forget the theory.
Forget the score.
When another Friday night comes around:
Would I actually reach for this combination again?
If the answer is no, that’s something you deserve to know.

Vol. 11 — Sunday Went Off Script at Jallo
An uplifting talent show led Gina and me to an unplanned Sunday stop at Jallo Wine & Spirits in New Port Richey. I ordered Jallo’s private-barrel Angel’s Envy Single Barrel with an Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story. Gina went with espresso and a Tatiana chocolate cigar. Add leather chairs, a covered patio, attentive service and three football games, and Sunday earned its own Friday Night Pour.
Vol. 10 — Elijah Craig Small Batch + Davidoff Maduro Robusto
Creamy + Rich • 4.5 Robes
A 94-proof bourbon meets a 5 × 50 Maduro Robusto in a pairing that never needed to get loud to work. The Davidoff opened creamy, moved into chocolate and smoke, then finished with coffee and cedar, while Elijah Craig kept vanilla, sweetness and toasted oak running underneath it. Add a V-cut, a dependable 45–60 minute burn, one completely self-inflicted relight, a podcast and an F-150 that desperately needed detailing, and Vol. 10 proved Friday Night Pour doesn’t need a leather chair and a tasting room. Sometimes the driveway works just fine.
Vol. 9 — 1792 Small Batch + Macanudo Inspirado Red Gigante
Bold + Spicy • 4.5 Robes
A high-rye bourbon meets a 6 × 60 medium-full cigar in one of the bigger Friday Night Pour combinations yet. The opening is spice-on-spice, with black pepper, leather and rye spice all fighting for space. Then the cigar settles down, the bourbon gets creamier, and vanilla and caramel start doing the heavy lifting. Add a perfect 90-minute burn, zero relights, Thursday night football, an F-150 tailgate and Gina showing up with a Groovy Blue, and Vol. 9 became exactly what Friday Night Pour is supposed to be: a real night, a real pairing and absolutely no need to make it fancy.
Vol. 8 — Old Forester 100 + Deadwood Fat Bottom Betty
Old Forester 100 brought banana, vanilla, caramel, baking spice and enough 100-proof backbone to cut through Fat Bottom Betty’s sugary opening. Betty fought the flame early, then settled into a razor-sharp burn as cocoa and herbal notes pushed the second third into a full Bananas Foster experience. When the cigar turned richer and earthier late, Old Forester’s oak stayed onstage and kept the pairing balanced. Betty had attitude, the bourbon had backbone, and together they earned 4.75 Robes.
Pairing Style: Sweet + Bold
Best For: Off-duty Friday nights when dessert sounds better in a glass and an ashtray.

Vol. 7 — Baker’s 7 + La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amor
Baker’s 7 brings burnt caramel, vanilla and oak against a medium-full Mi Amor Robusto that develops from chocolate and nuttiness into earth and black pepper. The 107-proof bourbon stayed present without running over the cigar, while its sweetness gave the darker tobacco and late pepper exactly the contrast they needed. Balanced, easy to enjoy, and absolutely worth pairing again.

Vol. 6 — Rabbit Hole Cavehill + Oliva Serie O Robusto
Honey • Vanilla • Toasted Grain + Cedar • Earth • Nuts • Spice
Cavehill’s sweeter honey, vanilla and toasted-grain character meets the Serie O’s earthier Nicaraguan profile. Neither side takes over, and the combination gets better once the cigar settles into its second third.
Pairing Style: Sweet + Earthy
Best For: A balanced Friday-night porch pairing

Caramel • Vanilla • Rye Spice + Cedar • Cocoa • Coffee • Pepper
The New World Dorado brings considerably more muscle to Friday Night Pour with a medium-full Nicaraguan profile built around cedar, black pepper, earth and toasted tobacco before developing cocoa, coffee and roasted nuts through the middle. Redemption Bourbon answers at 92 proof with caramel, vanilla, light oak and baking spice. The pairing really finds its stride in the second third, when the bourbon’s vanilla and caramel meet the cigar’s cocoa while oak connects naturally with cedar.
Pairing style: Bold + Balanced
Best for: After-dinner patio time when you want a cigar with more horsepower
Pairing highlight: Redemption’s sweetness rounds off the Dorado’s pepper while cocoa, coffee, cedar, oak and spice give the pairing enough depth to keep evolving.

Part of what gives bourbon so much pairing potential is its relationship with oak. Federal whiskey standards require bourbon to be aged in charred new oak containers, which helps explain why oak-related flavors show up so often in bourbon-and-cigar combinations.
