What Is Friday Night Pour?
Friday Night Pour is my weekly bourbon-and-cigar pairing series here at Bathrobe Patriot.
Each episode starts with:
One bourbon.
One cigar.
One Friday night.
Then I follow the pairing through the cigar instead of taking two sips, three puffs and declaring victory.
I want to know:
Does either one overpower the other?
Does the bourbon change what I notice in the cigar?
Does the cigar change what I notice in the bourbon?
Does the pairing improve as the cigar develops?
And most importantly:
Would I pair them again?
That last question matters more to me than anything else.
Because Friday Night Pour isn’t about finding combinations that sound impressive.
It’s about finding combinations worth repeating.

Vol. 6 — Rabbit Hole Cavehill + Oliva Serie O Robusto
Some Friday Night Pour pairings are about horsepower. This one is about balance.
Rabbit Hole Cavehill brings honey, vanilla, fruit and toasted grain to the chair. The Oliva Serie O Robusto answers with cedar, earth, nuttiness and Nicaraguan spice.
What makes it work isn’t that they taste alike. It’s the way Cavehill’s sweeter side rounds the cigar’s earth and spice while the Serie O gives the bourbon something darker to push against.
The second third is where this pairing really finds its groove.

How I Judge Every Friday Night Pour
I’m not giving a pairing a good score just because I like the bourbon.
And I’m not giving it a good score because I like the cigar.
The combination has to work.
That’s why every episode eventually faces the same test.
The Friday Night Pour Test
Did either one overpower the other?
If I can’t taste the bourbon anymore because the cigar bulldozed it, we have a problem.
Same thing in reverse.
Did the bourbon change the cigar?
A good sip can make sweetness, spice, wood, cocoa, coffee or other characteristics suddenly become more noticeable in the next draw.
That’s interesting.
Did the cigar change the bourbon?
This is one of my favorite parts.
The whiskey in the glass hasn’t changed.
Your palate has.
A cigar can suddenly make a bourbon seem sweeter, oakier, spicier or completely different from the first sip.
Did the pairing get better?
Cigars evolve.
So the pairing should be judged over time.
What works during the first third may become fantastic—or fall apart—during the second and final thirds.
Would I pair them again?
Here’s the big one.
Forget the tasting vocabulary.
Forget the theory.
Forget the score.
When another Friday night comes around:
Would I actually reach for this combination again?
If the answer is no, that’s something you deserve to know.

Part of what gives bourbon so much pairing potential is its relationship with oak. Federal whiskey standards require bourbon to be aged in charred new oak containers, which helps explain why oak-related flavors show up so often in bourbon-and-cigar combinations.

Because eventually you realize the best part wasn’t getting the bottle.

Medium-bodied cigars are an easy place to begin because they can provide enough flavor to interact with bourbon without necessarily overwhelming it. Connecticut, Cameroon, Habano and Maduro cigars can all work depending on the whiskey.
